Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago with the Kids

Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day parade happened last Saturday. But there’s still a boatload of fun things happening to celebrate on the actual day…. tomorrow! Here, we’ve uncovered 5 more family friendly activities for you to spend the day with the kids!

While bowling may not historically be part of the St. Patrick’s Day tradition, Pinstripes‘ $3 bowling for kids tomorrow from 10 am to noon, makes a good case for it. Dress the kids in their best green sweaters and bowl a few frames to get the day off to a festive start!

Learn about Irish tradition and culture at the Irish American Heritage Center’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Immerse yourself in all things Irish: food, dance, drink and live music. The kids can get their faces painted or learn a jig, then watch the Trinity Irish Dancers perform at 3 pm. Kids 12-and-under are free and adults’ tickets cost just $10. The events kick off at noon and the party doesn’t stop until midnight, so make sure to wear your UNICEF Kid Power Band!

At the Art Insitute, an exhibit showcasing Irish decorative and fine arts, Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design 1690-1840opens on March 17. The kids may not care all that much about the art, but we think they’ll enjoy the kick-off ribbon-cutting ceremony, if only for the bagpipers who will be on hand to play. Then walk down the street to Maggie Daley Park to let them climb aboard the life-sized play ship and the mega slide. If they’re still going strong, take a spin around the 27,500 square foot Skating Ribbon, a  meandering ice-rink-path. It holds up to 700 skaters at one time, so it’s always a nonstop party and the admission is free (skate rentals: $12).

There’s more straight-up kid fun over at Pickle’s Playroom, which is throwing a St. Patrick’s Day Party on Friday between 10 and 5. Drop by the playroom for live music, holiday themed crafts and maybe even a rare juggling Leprechaun sighting (if you arrive before noon). Dress in green to receive a discounted $9 admission.

For fun all-weekend long, grab the whole family and boogie down to the best of The Beatles with Evanston Dance Ensemble! Learn to dance moves professional choreographers have paired with some of the Beatles greatest hits. Classes will be offered Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 1 and 4 pm; kids get in for $16, adults for $24. So grab the family and get ready to dance! Love is all you need!
